New Delhi, April 13: A human rights organisation today claimed cases of death in police custody increased by over 40 per cent in four years and Maharashtra topped the list with 246 such incidents.
According to the report titled: “Torture in India-2010” by Asian Centre for Human Rights, there has been an increase of 41.66 per cent in custodial deaths between 2004-2005 and 2007-2008.
The report accused the state government of treating the Prevention of Torture Bill, 2010 with “secrecy”.
“It is the ‘aam aadmi’ who are the majority victims of torture in India and the UPA has failed to address the violations of their rights,” Director, Asian Centre for Human Rights, Suhas Chakma told reporters during release of the report.
