Carpenter who returned Rs59 crore

Ahmedabad, October 16: Jugal Kishore Jangid could not believe his eyes. His savings account balance showed Rs59.30 crore, instead of Rs2.5 lakh. Jangid, a carpenter, certainly wasn’t prepared for this early morning surprise, at the ATM.

To make sure he wasn’t dreaming, Jangid checked his account again, at 6am at another ATM. He still couldn’t believe it, so visited another ATM after two hours, but the result was the same.

Jangid’s makes Rs7,000 a month, but he did not withdraw the money. Instead, he decided to inform the bank. First, Jangid told his friend Anju Shekhat, who in turned talked to his chartered accountant P Khandelwal. Khandelwal decided to take the help of Durgesh Butch, former treasurer of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

On behalf of Jangid, GCCI took up the matter with the Gujarat Circle office of Punjab National Bank. “On investigating the case, we came to know that the balance shown in Jangid’s account was illusionary. There was no change in the balance,” said AK Roy Choudhary, deputy general manager of PNB.

According to Choudhury, his branch informed the Delhi-based head office and came to know that the ATM server had been out of order in the morning. “Jangid’s account must have shown that money because of the error and it was rectified immediately,” he said.

Despite the “illusionary” money, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and PNB will felicitate Jangid for his honesty.
