Cardiologist shot dead by former armyman who loved his maid

A 51-year-old cardiologist was shot dead in central Delhi early this morning allegedly by a former soldier who wanted the victim’s maid to stay with him, police said.

The incident was reported from Rajinder Nagar locality at around 2:30 am and the victim Sanjeev Dhawan worked with the Ganga Ram Hospital, Devesh Srivastava, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central), said.

The accused Dharmendra Kumar Tandon(30), who worked in the army as a gunman, was arrested from Karol Bagh Metro
station. He is working as a security guard at Gurgaon’s Palm String Hotel.

Police said Tandon, who hails from Bilaspur, loved the maid Sangeeta who has been working at the victim’s house since August 29.

Tandon wanted Sangeeta to leave Dhawan’s place and start living with him but she refused. He recently went to Dhawan’s place and threatened him also.

Last night, Tandon telephoned Dhawan and threatened him again.

“Early in the morning after consuming alcohol, he came to Dhawan’s house from Gurgaon. First, he went to the third floor of the house, where the doctor’s tax assistant Tarun Kalra lives with his family, and manhandled Kalra,” a senior police official said.

According to Dhawan’s son Sarthak, police said, they woke up at around 2:30 am after hearing commotion and somebody hurling abuses at them, came out of their first floor. Sarthak claimed Tandon came dressed in army uniform.

Dhawan then identified Tandon who allegedly opened fire at the doctor. He died on way to hospital.

Tandon then fled from the spot.

Sangeeta, who hails from Kanpur, told police that she had met Tandon at New Delhi Railway Station 18 months ago. She was living with him in Sarita Vihar but later separated after he was jailed in connection with an assault case.

Tandon had joined the army in 2000 and left the job in 2010 due to a medical problem. He told the police that he was married and had three children.
