Car sales rise 20 percent to 155,600 units

New Delhi, April 09: Local car sales in India rose 20 percent from the year earlier in March to 155,600 autos from 129,585, data issued Friday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed.

SIAM didn’t give an immediate reason for the rise in the sale of cars. Automobile sales are considered a key indicator of the health of India’s economy.

According to the SIAM data, local motorcycle sales rose to 708,349 units last month from 521,993 a year ago, while the sales of trucks soared to 67,362 year-on-year from 41,797 units.

The total vehicle sales in March stood at 1.23 million as against 894,079 units sold in March 2009, SIAM said.

During month, India exported 159,953 vehicles, up from 113,866 in the like month last year.

India sold 1.53 million cars in 2009-10 as compared with 1.22 million the year before.

Total vehicle sales last year stood at 12.29 million, up from 9.72 million in 2008-09.
