Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday said that he would meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to seek status report on bringing back abducted workers from Iraq.
Singh met relatives of missing construction workers in Amritsar and assured them of pursuing the federal government on this issue.
“Government of India has assured that they are in touch with the abducted victims and they say they are trying to find a way to get them released. It happened in June. It is already six months now; it is not possible that nothing has happened in six months. So that is the reason I will meet the foreign minister either on Monday or Tuesday and I will talk to her in details,” said Singh.
Swaraj had said last month that search for missing Indian workers in war-torn Iraq was still on; assuring families that India would leave no stone unturned to find their loved ones.
Meanwhile, relative of an abducted worker, Manish, said even after meeting Swaraj several times, there were only assurances.
“We have already met Sushma Swaraj seven times but did not get any detail, which would make us believe that all the victims are safe. We did not get any kind of proof from either the government or the state. That’s why he is meeting Sushma Swaraj and will give us information after getting details,” said Manish.
Naseem, wife of another victim, echoed the same voice.
“He has assured us that he will talk to Sushma Swaraj regarding the victims and then he will let us know what happens after that,” added Naseem.
Forty construction workers were kidnapped in Iraq ‘s second largest city of Mosul. Most of the abducted workers belong to Punjab. (ANI)
