Ongale, March 27: Environment-conscious people in Prakasam district on Saturday resolved to contribute their effort to fight climate change and make earth a better place to live in.
They switched off electric lights for more than an hour from 8.30 PM to express their commitment to protect the environment.
In a novel way, hundreds of students of the Rao and Naidu Engineering College here organised a candlelight procession and displayed candles in a pattern to mark the event on the campus. Students from over 10 schools and colleges participated in the campaign, Mr E Bharath, founder of Bharateeyam, a socio-cultural organisation said.
People from in and around Kanaparthi fighting against the proposed GENCO thermal power plant in their wetlands took part in the programme to register their opposition to the proposed plant in the thickly-populated area, said GENCO Vithareka Porata Samiti(GVPS) leader Unnam Ravi from Vindorayinipalem.
The Government should say no to “polluting” power plants and ponder over ways to generate “clean energy”, he said.
