Cairo, November 04: A new survey has found that Canadian Muslims are moderate and diverse and are content with their country’s freedoms and lawfulness, an example that can be applied to other Western countries.
“The Leuprecht-Winn study establishes that Canada has the most moderate, diverse, and open Muslim population in the West,” Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum in Washington, said in a commentary included with the study.
“Not only is this an advantage to build on but it suggests a potential role for moderate Canadian Muslims to take their message and perhaps their institutions to other Western countries.”
The study, by the MacDonald Laurier Institute which involved phone interviews with 455 Muslims in Ottawa, sought to understand the varied attitude of Muslims on Canada, foreign policy, terrorism and the introduction of Shari`ah.
The study, titled “What Do Muslim Canadians Want?”, found that the majority of Canadian Muslims (65%) reject terrorist groups.
The survey also found that 62% of Canadian Muslims want some form of Shari`ah to be applied in Canada.
Only 15% of respondents said that Shari`ah should be mandatory for all Muslims.
In Islam, Shari`ah governs all issues in Muslims’ lives from daily prayers to fasting and from, marriage and inheritance to financial disputes.
The Islamic rulings, however, do not apply on non-Muslims, even if in a dispute with non-Muslims
The poll also suggests that Canadian Muslims were not strongly opposed to a Caliphate.
Promising
The study also found that Canadian Muslims see their country as “welcoming and pluralistic”.
“That a thoughtful minority of Muslim newcomers come to Canada to escape extremism and embrace pluralism is a cause for much celebration,” the authors concluded.
“So too is the fact that many Muslim newcomers to Ottawa and Canada are so admiring of Canada’s freedoms and lawfulness.”
The poll found that Muslims were content with Canada’s freedoms and lawfulness.
Muslim respondents also said that they don’t view Canadian society as racist or Islampphobic and they strongly convinced that Canadian institutions, including democracy and the rule of law, provide a unique sense of freedom and security.
However, jobs and employment opportunities are the biggest concerns for Canadian Muslims.
Muslims make around 1.9 percent of Canada’s 32.8 million population, and Islam is the number one non-Christian faith in the Roman Catholic country.
A survey has showed the overwhelming majority of Muslims are proud to be Canadian.
