Hyderabad: People are unlawfully targeted for possessing, selling cow meat and also accused of consuming it. Well, a Hyderabad-based chief scientist has come up with an innovation which could identify the meat with a customized kit.
The kit can also be called as beef detection kit as it can identify the meat within limited time with the help of proteins found in the meat.
The kit is developed by Jayant Bhanushali who also runs an Immuno Diagnostic Centre has developed meat identification kits for the Maharashtra Police says it could help innocent people from being targeted and killed for no fault.
Says Dr Bhanushali, “There is a ban on sale of cow meat. There are often suspicions and wild accusations which is not good” and “The kit is based on Elisa, the immunology technique wherein anti-bodies are used to detect the kind of protein in the meat. The technology is readily available”.
The kit developed can be used to identify the meat within 30 mins. Dr. Bhanushali says a finely ground sample mixed with a special liquid would identify the meat based on proteins of the meat in 30 minutes.
Forensic Science Laboratory of Maharashtra has got the first kit to be used in the state. Earlier the test was conducted using DNA samples to laboratories, which were expensive as well as time-consuming.
Now the new kit comes for a price of Rs.8000. GHMC Veterinary Officer Venkateshwara said the team has been sending their meat samples of illegal meat to the National Research Centre on Meat.
Currently, the Telangana State Government also follows the ban on cow meat but buffalo meat is permitted along with submission of unproductive animal certificates from the Veterinary officers as reported from the sources.
