Call for abolition of death penalty

Hyderabad, October 11: The Union government should declare an immediate moratorium on executions and death penalty should be removed from the privisions of the Indian Penal Code, former chief justice of the Allahabad High Court A Lakshmana Rao has said.

Speaking at a conference on World Day against Death Penalty organised jointly by Jana Chaiatnya Vedika, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and Amnesty International-Hyderabad here today, he said “More than two-thirds of countries have abolished the death penalty in law or practice.

At least 95 countries have abolished death penalty for all crimes while nine have abolished it for all except extraordinary crimes such as those committed in times of war.’’ N Tulasi Reddy, PCC spokesman and head of the 20-point programme implementation committee, saw both advantages and disadvantages of the levy of death penalty or abolishing it.
