Cabinet recommends President’s rule in Maharashtra

The Union Cabinet on Saturday gave its nod for imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra.

A meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is in the US, decided to recommend President’s rule in the state.

President’s rule was necessitated after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following Nationalist Congress Party withdrew its support from the coalition.

Earlier on Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan submitted his resignation to Governor C.V. Rao , after his Congress Party snapped its ties with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Chavan served as Maharashtra Chief Minister for a little less than four years.

The alliance broke over the two estranged allies not being on the same page as far as allocation of seats in the state was concerned ahead of assembly polls.

Maharashtra will now go to polls on October 15 with all the major four parties contesting alone. There are 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra . (ANI)
