New Delhi, July 17: Bye-elections to 13 Rajya Sabha seats in ten states would be held on August 10, the Election Commission announced on Thursday.
Elections would be held for three seats in Maharashtra, two in Madhya Pradesh and one each in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Ten of the 13 seats fell vacant following election of sitting members to the Lok Sabha in recent general elections.
Sharad Yadav (Bihar), Dilip Singh Judev (Chhattisgarh), Narendra Singh Tomar and Sushma Swaraj (both Madhya Pradesh), Supriya Sule, Praful Patel and Sushil Kumar Shinde (all Maharashtra), Baijayant Panda (Orissa), Jaswant Singh (Rajasthan), Jai Prakash Aggarwal (Delhi) and Farooq Abdullah (J and K) have been elected to the Lok Sabha.
Former Union Minister H R Bhardwaj, who was elected to Upper House from Haryana, has been appointed Karnataka Governor and Balihari Babu has resigned from BSP.
The EC has decided not to hold election to the lone seat in Punducherry which fell vacant after election of V Narayanasamy to the Lok Sabha as the remaining term of seat was less than one year.
Notification would be issued on July 23 and the last date for filing nominations will be July 30. Scrutiny would take place on July 31 and the last date for withdrawal would be August three. Counting of votes would take place on August 10.
