Hyderabad, December 09: The Andhra Pradesh Motor Sports Club will conduct a national drag racing competition on December 12 and 13. The race will be the third in a series of such events, the last two were held in June and October 2009.
Drag racing is a competition in which vehicles compete to be the first to cross a set finish line, usually from a stationary position, and on a straight path. This race will be a quarter-mile (402.3 m), but 1,000 ft (301.5 m) and one eighth mile (201 m) races are also standard. Drag races are started electronically, with a series of vertically-arranged lights known as a Christmas tree. At the green light, the race begins.
Several measurements are taken for each race: reaction time, elapsed time, and speed at finish. Reaction time is the time from the green light illuminating to the vehicle leaving the starting line. Elapsed time measures how long a vehicle takes to cross from the start line to the finish line, one-quarter mile away. Participants can also use NOS turbo charging, which provides a short, intense boost of speed to drag racers. NOS is an abbreviation of Nitrous Oxide Systems. By injecting nitrous oxide into the engine’s cylinders, a racer may increase his overall speed to more than 250 kilometres per hour for a short time.
The event will be organised at the ground adjacent to the in-flight catering complex at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad.
Teams from all over the country will participate, 30 classes of cars and motorcycles will compete, including two new classes for ladies’ cars up to 1300 cc. In addition, a separate ‘Champion of Champions’ trophy will place all the participants of drag races in competition with each other. GMR Hyderabad International Airport, Novotel Hyderabad, and Kingfisher are sponsoring this event.
Practice and qualifying rounds will be held on Friday, December 11, from 10:00 am.
