Burhan Wani’s death anniversary: 7 day long protest held

Srinagar: Joining Kashmir based militant outfit at the age of 15  late Burhan Wani, a 22-year-old Hizbul commander had a bounty of Rs. 10 lakh on his head. The youth militant was killed in an encounter on July 8 last year.

The United Jehad Council (UJC) called out to people from sides of the Line of Control (LoC) to join in the week-long programme to pay tribute to the slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani.

The 7-day agitation will mark the first death anniversary of Burhan Wani. There would also be a state-wide shutdown observed on July 8 and July 13 respectively.

Homage will be paid to Wani and the Kashmiri martyrs of 1931. Public gatherings will also be held.

To cope with the situation, security forces have increased their presence manifold along the hinterland and national highways to prevent any kind of separatist attack, a fortnight before.

The Army has deployed at least 2,000 troops in the South Kashmir especially in the Tral region, they have increased the combing and search operations. The Army headquarters have also ordered five battalions.

Following the killing of the Hizbul’s commander tensions in the region just escalated with the cases of stone pelting coming to the fore. The aftermath of the killing is seen as one of the bloodiest periods that Kashmir witnessed. Kashmir observed shutdown for months and normal lives got crippled.
