Bullets recovered from airport staff

Hyderabad, October 28: Five of the six live bullets which were found in a dustbin at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad, 10 months back, were recovered today from two persons, one an ex-employee and the other an employee of the house keeping agency engaged by the airport authorities.

The duo did not surrender them to police or airport authorities but kept them to use as pendants. However, one of the bullets is still missing.

The bullets were handed over to the duo — executive manager Shanmukha Rao and the then operations manager Alenk Hansik, by a sweeper, RGIA SI J Bhaskar said. Shanmukha Rao put three bullets in his sports bag and Alen kept his three in office cupboard. Later, he took two of them leaving one in the cupboard. Six months back, Alen left the job.

On October 23, Shanmukha Rao came to the airport with the sports bag in which he kept the bullets, 10 months back. “He might have forgotten that the bullets were in the bag and tried to enter the airport with it. While screening the baggage, security personnel noticed the bullets and handed over Shanmukha Rao to us for interrogation,’’ Bhaskar said. Based on the confession of Shanmukha Rao, police recovered two bullets from Alen’s house at Seetaphalmandi.

The sixth bullet, however, could not be found in the cupboard where Alen kept it.

Police registered cases under Section 25 of Arms Act and arrested the duo.
