Bugti’s son moves HC seeking registration of case against Mush

Islamabad, September 08: A petition seeking registration of police case against former President Pervez Musharraf and his close aides for “assassination” of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti was filed Tuesday in Balochistan’s High Court, four days after a similar plea was dismissed by a lower court.

Bugti’s son Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti filed the petition requesting the High Court to direct police to register a case against Musharraf, former premier Shaukat Aziz, ex-Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and the then Balochistan Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani.

The sessions court at Sibbi had earlier rejected Jamil Bugti’s petition on the ground that the Baloch leader was not killed in the area under its jurisdiction.

Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed with 37 of his followers in a military operation in Dera Bugti district on August 26, 2006. Musharraf had ordered the operation against Bugti, a former Chief Minister of Balochistan and leader of Jamhoori Watan Party.

The new case is expected to add to Musharraf’s legal woes as police in Islamabad have already booked him for “illegally” detaining over 60 judges during the 2007 emergency.

Last month, the Supreme Court declared the emergency imposed by Musharraf as unconstitutional and illegal. This has raised the possibility of him being tried on charges of treason.
