BSNL EPINs worth Rs 1.40 crore missing!

Hyderabad, June 03: In what looks like a major scam, compact discs containing secret electronic permanent index numbers (EPINs) worth more than Rs 1.40 crore have gone missing from the office of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited here in the city.

Though they were stolen a couple of months back, BSNL assistant general manager A Ratna Mohan Rao lodged a complaint with the Saifabad police only on Wednesday.

BSNL officials and police suspect it to be an “inside job.” The CDs have gone missing from the salesII department at the Telephone Bhavan in Adarsh Nagar.

EPINs are used on recharge coupons of BSNL mobile services and each CD has nearly 5,000 such numbers, Saifabad police inspector K Shankar said.

In his complaint, the BSNL AGM pointed fingers at Loknath Rao, incharge of the section from where the CDs had disappeared, and four other employees working in the same department. The police registered cases under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) and 420 (cheating).
