Srinagar, March 04: Border Security Force (BSF) commandant R K Birdi, allegedly involved in the killing of Zahid Farooq on February 5 at Brane Nishat, today surrendered before the police here.
Mr Birdi arrived at Kothibagh police station and surrendered there before the police.
The counsel of Mr Birdi, who had applied for anticipatory bail in a local court here, said his client presented himself before the police voluntarily.
He said the BSF commandant was doing so to assist the police in reaching logical conclusion of the case.
Mr Birdi, who has been suspended and attached with headquarters here, has also informed his higher officer, the counsel said.
The counsel alleged that police failed to file objections to the anticipatory bail application filed by Mr Birdi through him in the court.
He said Mr Birdi had decided to withdraw the bail application and present himself before the police.
The counsel said the officer was ready for investigation if he would be made accused in the case. But, he said, he himself handed over the accused BSF constable of his battalion Lakhvinder to police.
Police will present the accused officer in a local court here.
Lakhvinder, who was arrested for allegedly opening fire on Zahid last month, had alleged in his statement to police that Mr Birdi ordered him to fire.
Other BSF personnel, who were also questioned in the case by the police, also alleged that Lakhvinder was forced to open fire by the officer on Zahid when they were on way to camp.
Killing of Zahid evoked massive protests and also rocked the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, where ruling and opposition members demanded stern action against the accused security forces involved in the killing.
However, a local court has directed the state government to file detailed police investigation report in the killing of Zahid.
