Britons spend $60K on beers for mates

London, May 08: The average Briton spends £39,480 ($58,461) in a lifetime buying beers for others, a survey has found.

Each drinker can expect to shell out around £840 a year on rounds for friends, partners and work colleagues, The Sun reports.

This means that, as a nation, the UK population will spend £30 billion a year on rounds.

The poll also found that the typical Brit goes out to bars, pubs and restaurants three times a month, despite the current financial climate. On average, each drinker will buy 1.8 rounds – each costing about £13 – on an evening out.

But the figure is higher on men’s get-togethers. The survey, by www.OnePoll.com, said nearly a quarter of men go out twice a week, and buy rounds in groups of five. That equates to around £200 a month.

“Buying rounds is a way of life in Britain, and these results show us to be a very generous nation. The cost adds up and over their lifetime it amounts to a sizeable piece of their disposable income,” said a OnePoll spokesman.

The survey of 2,000 people, aged 18 to 65, said that skipping out on buying a round as the biggest sin among drinkers.

Seventy percent also said it really annoyed them when others ordered more expensive drinks after getting their rounds out of the way.
