London, June 22: Lindsey German from a London-based anti-war group says the rising fatalities in Afghanistan have made it difficult for Britain to justify its military’s involvement in the devastated country.
Foreign troops will not leave Afghanistan any time soon, the member of Stop the War Coalition told Media on Monday.
Britain is second to the United States in terms of war fatalities in Afghanistan. The British deaths have already hit 300.
In the past ten months, Britain has lost over 100 soldiers, while it was only last August that Britain passed the 200 mark. The number of deaths in the Afghan war is escalating not only among the British but also among other US-led troops as well as the Afghans, she went on to say.
German argued that the British government is finding it increasingly hard to justify the war in Afghanistan particularly when it is expected to announce its severe public spending cuts.
“British people say, now that we are spending billions on this war why are we spending all this money on a war which most of the people in Britain and the people in Afghanistan don’t want it, and which clearly is not succeeding,” she further explained.
According to British Prime Minister David Cameron, British troops will leave Afghanistan as soon as the Afghans are able to take over security responsibilities. However, German believes foreign troops will not leave Afghanistan any time soon.
“There is no clear timeline,” she said, adding that such promises had been constantly given by many others particularly by US President Barak Obama.
“Most people know whatever timetable is put forward, the war is not succeeding because more people are opposed to the war anyway and want the troops to return home,” she concluded.
