Male panda Sunshine and girlfriend Sweetie had a window of just 36 hours to get on with it, but despite “natural sparks” the pair failed to mate, The Sun reported Thursday.
Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo hoped for a panda love affair that would lead to babies.
They even made a sex tape featuring the pair’s encounters.
On Tuesday Sunshine mounted Sweetie five times as they met in the same cage for the first time – but they did not actually mate.
A “love tunnel” between their enclosures was opened to allow them to get together.
The pair met again several times Wednesday but again with no success.
Inexperience has been blamed for the love fest’s flop.
Pandas are usually only fertile for 36 hours a year and Sweetie’s time ran out Wednesday.
The pandas – real names Tian Tian and Yang Guang – are now back on display.
The pair arrived in Scotland from Ya’an reserve in Chengdu, China, Dec 4 last year.
The Edinburgh Zoo will be their home for the next 10 years.
