London, December 06: A leading British anti-war group says western governments including Britain are “doing everything possible” to heighten tension with Iran, in line with a “brinkmanship” policy.
The Stop the War Coalition said in a newsletter that the British government’s move to close the Iranian embassy in London blocks “one of the last channels for negotiations” with Iran.
“The western powers seem to be doing everything possible to increase tension with Iran. [A few days ago] EU ministers imposed new sanctions on top of those agreed by Canada, the US and Britain…. [British PM] David Cameron promised yet another round in January,” it said.
The pro-peace campaign group said the language of threat, adopted over western allegations of deviation in Iran’s nuclear program, was also repeated by other British ministers who warned of further “appropriate measures” against Iran.
The organization said the warnings were issued indiscriminately despite Iran’s repeated denials of any such claims, and the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has found no proof to western anti-Iranian allegations.
“The recent IAEA report showed there is no conclusive evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, but this kind of western brinkmanship can only antagonize [Iran],” the anti-war group said.
The campaign group also said it is organizing a national campaign to counter the British government’s efforts against Iran.
“Stop the War is planning a national campaign against an attack on Iran in the next months. The campaign starts with a public rally in London on Monday,” it said.
The rally dubbed “Don’t Attack Iran” is planned for Monday December 5, at Conway Hall, London.
