Britain insists on using nuclear power

London, March 17: Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron says nuclear energy is the most important energy used in the country, regardless of the recent crisis in Japan.

“I do think that nuclear power should be part of the mix in future as it is part of the mix right now,” Cameron said.

“Obviously I’m sure that everyone watching the dreadful events in Japan will want to make sure we learn any lessons,” he added.

British Energy and Climate Secretary Chris Huhne has requested a study of the full implications of the recent crisis in Japan till mid-May in order to provide a final report to the nuclear sector before October.

European utilities are to spend billions of pounds on the new proposed nuclear power plants in Britain. They are also aware of any possible delay.

Meanwhile, Huhne asked Britain’s chief nuclear inspector Mike Weightman to evaluate the crisis in Japan and apply the result to the 10 nuclear power stations in Britain.

He also asked Weightman to build the most advanced nuclear power plants in the country.

On March 11, Japan was hit by a devastating 8.9 magnitude which triggered a deadly tsunami, with nearly 3,373 people confirmed dead as of Tuesday.

But all attention has been directed to the Fukushima nuclear plant, where several explosions have caused the release of radioactivity into the atmosphere.

Exposure to radioactive waves can increase the probability of developing some major diseases, mainly cancer, tumors, and genetic disorders.
