New Delhi, Apr 9 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday said that personnel of the UP police who kept a 10-year old girl behind bars for over ten hours. She further stated, “The main issue here is that a new law has been passed by Parliament which has a specific clause that if the police are responsible for this kind of torture on a rape survivor, the police themselves should be prosecuted and punished. They have to be sent to jail. Therefore, this is a case in which the new law should come into operation and all these guilty police personnel including the senior officers must be prosecuted and sent to jail.” Earlier, a 10-year old girl was raped on Sunday around 7:30 pm and then detained by the Uttar Pradesh police. This incident happened three months after the horrifying gang-rape of a physiotherapy student who was beaten with iron rods on a moving bus before being thrown into the street. She later died at a hospital in Singapore. This incident sparked outrage in the country with people demanding for tougher laws for safety of women. One woman is raped every 20 minutes in the country according to the Indian National Crime Records Bureau. Police estimate only four out of 10 rapes are reported, largely due to victims” fear of being shamed by their families and communities. (ANI)
