BRD Hospital tragedy: Lodged in UP jail, Dr. Kafeel struggling with serious health issues

GORAKHPUR: Dr Kafeel Khan hailed as ‘hero’ for saving the lives of countless children is presently lodged in Gorakhpur jail and his health is deteriorating, said his wife.

According to News 18 reports, Dr Shabistan claimed, “My husband’s health is deteriorating. Doctors have said that the case must be referred to Lucknow, but it the jail administration is not executing the orders. I fear for my husband’s life.’

“Dr Kafeel suffered a stroke on March 29 but he was not given proper treatment. The ex-principal of BRD Medical College, Dr Rajiv Mishra, is suffering from liver disease and diabetes, but he too is not getting proper medical attention. The principal’s wife, Dr Purnima Shukla, suffered a hairline fracture. They all need treatment,” reported Times Of India.

“The doctors were killed inside jail in NRHM case. The same could happen in this case too,” she added.

Dr. Kafeel was in-charge of the encephalitis ward and a paediatrician of the BRD Medical College and Hospital at the time of tragedy that took over 60 infants lives.

Dr. Kafeel is one of the nine accused in connection with the deaths and was booked under Sections 120-B, 308 and 409 of the IPC.
