Rio De Janeiro: Brazil’s acting President Michel Temer has announcement an emergency meeting of the security ministers for each of Brazil’s states after a gang rape of a teenage girl in Rio de Janeiro triggered wide condemnation.
He promised to create a federal police force unit task to deal with crimes against women.
Temer said in a statement that. “It’s absurd that in the 21st century we have to live with barbarous crimes like this.”
The incursion came to light when several men joked about the attack online, posting graphic photos and videos of the unconscious, naked teen on Twitter.
The teen believes she was intoxicated after going to her boyfriend’s house last Saturday she also says that when she woke up she was in a different house, and surrounded by 30 men.
Hundreds of protesters on Friday demanded an end to sexual violence.
Police said they had been unable to confirm exactly how many men may have taken part. Arrest warrants have been issued for 30 men, including one for the boyfriend.
Mr Temer said. “I condemn most forcefully the rape of the teenager in Rio de Janeiro,”
Rio police chief Fernando Veloso said. “If these images hadn’t been posted, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now,” he added that many rapes go unreported.
The victim post a message on Facebook, that she was thankful for the support she had received and added: “I really thought I was going to be badly judged.”
She later said: “All of us can go through this one day. It does not hurt the uterus but the soul because there are cruel people not being punished!! Thanks for the support.”
“It is absurd that in the 21st Century we should have to live with barbaric crimes such as this.”
He said the authorities were working “to find those responsible” for the attack.
