Mumbai, June 23: His act was brave. But unfortunately, it was not fruitful. Juhu resident Mehtab Ansari made a daring effort to nab a chain snatcher on Tuesday morning. After a long bike chase, when Ansari had nearly caught the thief, the latter shot at him and fled.
Ansari, who resides in Juhu Azad Nagar Society along with his wife and two children, went to wake up the water tanker drivers in the Lallubhai Park area of Andheri (West), as a daily routine.
“Around 6.30am when he was seated on the bike, he heard a girl shouting for help. She told him that a person on a black Pulsar motorcycle had snatched her gold chain and had fled towards Andheri (East),” said Ansari’s elder brother Aftab.
Ansari started chasing the chain snatcher on his motorcycle. “As the thief was wearing a helmet, he could not see his face. Near Hotel Regency in Andheri East, Ansari closed in and kicked the thief’s vehicle, following which the bike skidded,” Aftab said, adding that the snatcher then pulled out his gun and fired at Ansari that hit him on his right foot.
“Mehtab called me up saying he had been shot. I rushed to the spot and took him to the Cooper Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and is now out of danger,” Aftab said.
Ansari’s family members said they were proud of his brave act, but were a little upset that the girl, Pallavi Jevant, 23, whose chain was snatched, did not even bother to turn up at the hospital to know whether her saviour was fine or not.
“It is shocking that the girl did not turn up even once to see whether my brother is fine. My brother had risked his life for her, but she did not meet him to even thank him,” Aftab said.
