Hyderabad, November 02: A training course was launched today for prisoners chosen to work in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit to be set up at Cherlapally jail soon.
The prisons department officials said 10 prisoners, including engineers and other professionals having computer knowledge, will be trained by Radiant Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employees.
TCS has provided 10 computers for training. Later, these 10 prisoners will train another 100 prisoners for working in the BPO.
“Hopefully, Cherlapally prison will be the first-of-its-kind BPO in a couple of months. It would be operated on Public-Private Partnership (PPP). TCS will be providing hardware equipment and Radiant Technologies will help with training and other services,’’ director general (Prisons) CN Gopinath Reddy told Express.
He also added only convicts will be taken into the BPO and not under-trail prisoners.
The BPO will take up projects like data processing and data entry. Each prisoner associated with the BPO will be paid a salary in addition to general allowance, paid to them by the government.
“Out of the salary paid to each prisoner working in the BPO, one-third will be diverted to the prisoner’s victim fund and the remaining given to the concerned prisoner,’’ Gopinath Reddy said.
Officials are expecting each prisoner might get a salary of around Rs 6,000 per month.
However, officials said only prisoners who had a good conduct record will be given employment.
