Agona, May 31: A 19-year old school dropout of the Agona District Assembly Junior High School at Agona Duota has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a teacher at her quarters.
Phillip Acquah was arrested by some members of the watchdog committee who received a text message from the teacher when he tried to force her door open.
Briefing newsmen at Duotu, Nana Bukari Boye, Branhene of the town, said the chiefs in the district had been receiving reports from the headmistress of the school that some people had been knocking on the doors of female teachers asking to have sex with them. As this persists, some of the teachers had decided to leave town.
He said that the chiefs, worried about the development, formed a watchdog committee to keep vigil at the teachers’ quarters to arrest the culprits.
Nana Boye said the telephone numbers of the watchdog committee members were given to the female teachers to call anytime such unusual knocks were heard.
He said that at midnight on May 24, Acquah went to the quarters and knocked at the door of one of the female teachers threatening that if she refused to open up, he would force the door open and kill her after having sex with her.
According to Nana Boye, the female teacher text one of the members of the watchdog committee and they quickly rushed to the scene and arrested Acquah. He was subsequently handed over to the Agona Duakwa Police.
Nana Boye later told newsmen that teachers who decided to leave the town because of harassment had rescinded their decision, following the formation of the committee and the subsequent arrest of Acquah.
