Book on Begum Samru released

New Delhi, October 15: A book on the life of Begum Samru, who ruled Sardhana, a principality near Meerut in the late 18th and early 19th century, was released here today.

“Begum Samru – Her Life and Legacy”, written by Preeti Sharma explores the fascinating story of Samru, regarded as the only Catholic ruler in the country.

“I lived in Meerut for four years during my childhood and ever since then the life of Begum Samru fascinated me,” Sharma said.

The writer said she feels Samru, also known as Joanna and Zebunissa after Baptism, was “one of the most colourful ladies in the later part of the 18th century”.

Samru was also the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, inherited from her European mercenary husband, Walter Reinhardt. The army consisted of Europeans and Indians.
