Bomb explosions kill three in Nigeria

Nigeria, April 25: Three bomb blasts in northeastern Nigeria have killed at least three people and wounded 14 others amid deteriorating security situation in the West African country.

The bombings struck a hotel and a transport hub in the town of Maiduguri, ahead of Tuesday’s state assembly and governorship elections.

“From our records the death toll has risen to three, which include a police corporal and two civilians who were at the tavern to have some drinks,” media quoted a regional police commissioner as saying.

The explosions are the latest in a spate of post-election violence in the country.

Riots broke out in the north after President Goodluck Jonathan’s election win over his northern rival Muhammadu Buhari earlier this month.

Buhari says his party will challenge the results.

The violence then spread to other regions. Rights groups say more than 500 people have been killed so far.

Nigeria has a history of vote fraud and violence, but the government has repeatedly promised free and fair elections.
