Baghdad, January 18: A bomber detonated his explosive vest among a group of young men who were about to join the Iraqi police force in Tikrit.A bomb attack on a police recruitment site in the central Iraqi city of Tikrit has left at least 50 people killed and more than 150 others wounded, officials say.
“Fifty people were killed and 150 wounded by a suicide bomber at a police recruitment centre in Tikrit,” an interior ministry official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
“A suicide attacker blew himself up at a police recruitment centre in the middle of Tikrit this morning,” a police officer in the city said.
The attack took place at 10:15 a.m. (0715 GMT) at the entrance to a police recruitment site in the middle of the city, and was the worst to hit Iraq in more than two months.
The death toll is the highest since militants stormed a church in Baghdad in October 2010, killing over 50 people.
Deadly bomb attacks continue to target security and police forces amid a new surge of violence in the war-torn country.
