Body of woman found hanging; husband, in-laws booked

New Delhi:The body of a 31-year-old married woman was found hanging at her house in Palam area of south west Delhi under mysterious conditions even as a case of dowry death has been registered against her husband and in-laws, police said today.

Mala’s body was found hanging at her rented accommodation at Raj Nagar in Palam village area yesterday evening, said a police officer.

She had left behind a suicide note but did not mention the reasons behind the extreme step, he said.

However, her brother Vishal Verma alleged that Mala was tortured by her husband Sanjiv and his family for dowry.

“Sanjiv had a property business and was putting pressure on my sister for money. He also talked to my father in this regard,” Vishal said.

He also alleged that the victim had talked to her elder sister yesterday afternoon and sounded “completely hopeless”.

Mala’s phone was snatched away by her husband and she was not allowed to go to her native place in Kanpur for family functions, Vishal said.

A case has been registered under sections 498(a) (cruelty), 304(b)(dowry death) and 34 (act done by several person with common intent) of IPC at Palam police station against Sanjiv and his fanily, Surender Kumar, DCP (south west) said.

No arrests have been made in the case, he said.

Mala got married to Sanjeev in 2011. They have a four-year-old son.
