A doctor of Lady Hardinge Hospital has committed suicide allegedly over marital discord, police said today.
“The body of Smita Rani, 31, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her husband Mohammad Sohail Fazal’s house in Dilshad Garden yesterday,” a senior police official said.
Rani had called her sister Prerna, an employee at Defence Ministry, and told her about her extreme step. When Prerna and brother Lalit reached her residence, they found it locked from inside.
“When they entered the house through a window, they found the body of Rani hanging,” the official said.
A post-mortem examination was conducted in GTB Hospital today.
Fazal and Rani fell in love and got married two years ago. But their relationship soured after a brief period. In April 2011, the couple applied for divorce at Karkardooma court.
The couple had been living together for the past three months in an attempt to mend their relationship.
According to Rani’s father, Fazal and his family not only harassed her over dowry demands but also pressurised her to change her religion.
Fazal, who runs a dispensary, is absconding.
