Kabul, May 03: A soldier from the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been killed in an explosion in eastern Afghanistan, says a statement by the Western military alliance.
ISAF announced in the early hours of Tuesday that the soldier was killed by an improvised bomb, Reuters reported.
The exact location of the incident and the soldier’s nationality remain unknown.
Over 160 US-led soldiers have so far been killed in war-torn Afghanistan since the beginning of 2011.
In 2010, as many as 711 foreign troops lost their lives in Afghanistan — an average of two a day — which is by far greater than the annual toll of 521 during 2009.
Some 150,000 NATO troops are currently fighting in war-ravaged Afghanistan, with plans to remain in the country beyond 2014.
This came a day after US President Barack Obama announced that al-Qaeda’s notorious leader, Osama bin Laden, was killed in Pakistan.
Many believe that the news of bin Laden’s death has left no excuse for the United States and its allies to remain in Afghanistan.
