Blast kills British soldier in Afghanistan

Kabul, February 15: A powerful roadside explosion has killed a British soldier in southern Afghanistan amid increasing causalities for foreign forces there.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, the soldier died after being hit by the blast while on foot patrol northeast of Sangin in Helmand Province on Sunday.

The British officials said his death was not connected to Operation Moshtarak, which is targeting Taliban strongholds in the south of the country.

With the latest incident, the death toll for British troops in the central Asian nation rose to 259 since the 2001 invasion.

Helmand is the base for a British taskforce totaling more than 8000 soldiers. The battle in Sangin has taken a heavy death toll on British soldiers in recent years.
