Blast kills 3 officers in NW Pakistan

Islamabad, May 10: An explosion outside a district court in northwest Pakistan has left at least three police officers dead and several others injured, local authorities say.

The bomb attack occurred at the main gate of the district court complex in Nowshera city, 40 kilometers northeast of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, the Associated Press said Tuesday.

A female police constable was killed immediately while two policemen later died of their injuries in a local hospital, doctors said.

At least five people were also wounded in the incident.

Regional police say preliminary reports indicate that the homemade bomb was planted at the court’s female checkpoint.

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan’s security landscape has been marred by growing acts of militancy, sectarian and ethno-political violence as a result of climbing US military and intelligence presence and operations in the Muslim country.

In northwestern Pakistan, Taliban-linked militants have recently waged a campaign of bomb blasts against government compounds, citing alleged collaborations with US officials.

On April, the United States acknowledged that the Taliban have gained strength in the volatile tribal regions that border Afghanistan.

The report concluded that there remains no clear path toward defeating militancy in Pakistan.
