Lucknow: BJP defeated the Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Samajwadi Party by 6000 votes.
The BJP snatches the Muzaffarnagar from ruling Samajwadi Party, which held the Muzaffarnagar assembly seat since 2012.
In Muzaffarnagar in 2013, at least 65 people were killed in communal clashes between Hindus and Muslims. Around 12,000 displaced from their homes.
Three Muslims candidates were responsible for BJP WIN in Muzaffarnagar seat. The result of the bypoll is being seen as a setback for the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are due in 2017. The ruling party has also lost Deoband seat to Congress.
All the three seats undergoing bypolls in the state are sitting seats of Samajwadi Party.
In Muzaffarnagar, BJP’s Kapildev Aggarwal won. In Deoband, the Congress candidate Mavia Ali beat SP’s Meena Rana by 3,000 votes. BJP came third.
In the third seat, Bikapur in Faizabad, Anand Sen of Samajwadi Party defeated INLD.
In both Deoband and Muzaffarpur, the Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM was expected to cut into Samajwadi Party’s Muslim vote base.
IMPORTANT POINT IN UP ELECTIONS
1: The most-watched seat was Muzaffarnagar, where the 2013 riot that left 65 dead and thousands displaced, reconfigured its politics. The BJP won the parliamentary seat in the 2014 national election held months after the riots in the deeply polarised area.
2: Muzaffarnagar’s BJP parliamentarian Sanjeev Balyan pulled out all stops to campaign for the by-polls.
3: ALL By-elections were held in all three seats after the death of Samajwadi Party lawmakers.
4: In both Deoband and Muzaffarnagar, the Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM was expected to cut into Samajwadi Party’s Muslim vote base.
