New Delhi, September 03: With Sonia Gandhi set to become Congress president for the fourth consecutive term, the BJP on Thursday said that she should offer the chair of party chief to somebody outside the Gandhi family just as she had “sacrificed” the post of Prime Minister.
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that according to Congress’s constitution, no office-bearer can become the president of any block, district or state unit for more than two terms.
“If Congress is a democratic party, as they claim to be, then it is high time that in accordance with the spirit of their own constitution the same rule is made applicable in case of their national president as well,” Prasad said.
“Is it not time for Sonia to consider making way for a Congress leader outside the Gandhi family in accordance with the spirit of the party constitution,” he asked.
He added that Sonia was the “tallest leader” of her party, enjoying power without any public accountability.
