BJP seeks action against rebel MLA

Shillong, August 11: The BJP today lodged a petition with Meghalaya Speaker Charles Pyngrope seeking disqualification of its lone MLA A L Hek who had joined the Congress last month. A BJP spokesman said the petition, signed by state unit president H S Syiemlieh, sought disqualification of Hek from the assembly on grounds that he violated the Anti-Defection Law by joining the Congress.

Significantly, Hek, who was the lone BJP MLA, had not resigned from the saffron party even though he formally joined Congress along with over 250 supporters on July 6 last. Hek, is a three-time legislator representing Pynthormukhrah constituency.

“I, being the only legislator, represent 100 per cent of BJPs legislature party. The BJPs legislature party has merged with the Congress,” Hek had said while joining the Congress even as he maintained that in a Christian-dominated state like Meghalaya it was difficult to be in a party which has stuck to its Hindutva agenda and reverted back to the issue of construction of Ram Temple.
