BJP presses for Chidambaram’s ouster

New Delhi, July 09: Alleging that Home Minister P. Chidambaram was as guilty as former communications minister A. Raja in the 2G spectrum scam, the Bharatiya Janata Party Saturday again demanded Chidambaram’s ouster from the cabinet.

‘Chidambaram is no less a wrongdoer than A. Raja. He just does not deserves a place where he is today, he deserves to be where A. Raja is,’ BJP spokesperson Tarun Vijay said, referring to the Tihar Jail where Raja is presently lodged.

‘He has compromised the responsibilities given to him by constitution. And he has acted against the interest of India and people of India,’ he alleged.

In its presentation on Thursday to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on telecom matters, the department of economic affairs noted that meetings between Chidambaram, then the finance minister, and Raja took place around May 29, 2008. However it was reported that no records of minutes of the meeting were kept.

The BJP Friday asked Chidambaram to quit for not maintaining recorded minutes of a meeting between him and Raja on 2G spectrum pricing.

‘The then finance minister’s (Chidambaram) position in the cabinet is getting increasingly untenable. He should be removed forthwith,’ BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Demanding a formal enquiry in the matter, she also said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should clarify the issue.
