BJP pips Congress in municipal ward by-poll

New Delhi, April 18: BJP today won the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar municipal ward in a by-poll by defeating Congress by a slender margin of 1,222 votes.

BJP’s Inderpreet Singh polled 6,914 votes while Congress’ Antul Kohli got 5,692.

Forty-per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the by-poll held today.

The seat was vacant since the death of sitting councillor Surjeet Singh Thekedar last year.

Keen to gain the sympathy vote, the BJP-SAD combine fielded Surjeet Singh’s son Inderpreet in the by-election.

Despite being a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, he contested on a BJP symbol.

The municipal ward is dominated by the Punjabi community.
