BJP MP given Award of Courage for showing interest in changing name of ‘Aurangzeb road’

New Delhi: Maheish Girri, a BJP MP from East Delhi was awarded with the Shivaji Award of Courage for showing interest in changing the name of the road named in the honour of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

According to the news reported in Indian wire, in 2015, Maheish Girri wrote to PM Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to correct the name of the road.
He added that “Every time I would see that road, it would hurt me… Aurangzeb ruined our culture, killed innocent people when he was in power. How can the capital have a road named after him? I thought it was wrong, so I took steps to get it corrected… I got threats but eventually, the name was changed.”

The name of the road was changed as ‘Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road’ on August 28, 2015.

After taking the award, he told that “Aaj ki bhasha mein Aurangzeb terrorist hai.”

At the symposium titled ‘Relevance of Sufism Today’ and an exhibition called ‘Dara Shukoh, the forgotten Prince of Islam’, Girri received the award. The event was also attended by Former President of Iranian Parliament Dr Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel. The event was to be inaugurated by Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu but due to Budget session he had skipped the event. The primary organisers of the event were Foundation for Advancement of Cultural Ties, run by French author and journalist Francois Gautier, and the Incredible Bharat Foundation.

French author and Journalist Francois Gautier said that“Aurangzeb believed in one religion, converted people and razed temples while the other was a Sufi scholar and practised enlightened Islam.Governments across the world, French, American, are looking for a moderate voice of Islam.”
