BJP to move adjournment motion against sugarcane order

New Delhi, November 18: BJP will try to put the government on the mat on farmers” issues during the Parliament session starting tomorrow with party chief Rajnath Singh himself moving an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha against an ordinance on sugar and sugarcane. “This government seems to have connived with sugar mills and brought an Ordinance – Sugarcane (Control) Amendment Order, 2009 – on sugar and sugarcane against the interest of the farmers.

We will raise this issue forcefully in Parliament with party president Rajnath Singh himself moving the adjournment motion in Lok Sabha tomorrow,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said. BJP feels the Minimum Support Price fixed by the government is too less and the problem will be aggravated next year as the crop yield is expected to go down.

“The sugarcane farmers are burning their crops. Instead of applying a balm on their wounds, the government is adopting anti-farmer policies,” Javadekar said.

He alleged that this issue also involved an import-export scam. “The Agriculture Minister said earlier that there is enough sugar and exported it forgetting that the sugarcane crop sown this year is less,” he said.

“The government exported 48 Lakh tons of sugar at Rs 12 per kg last year and we are now importing 70 Lakh tons at Rs 27 per kg,” Javadekar said. According to BJP, sugarcane crop was sown on 51 Lakh Hectare two years back.
