Hyderabad, July 22: A Round Table meeting organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State committee here today decided to launch an agitation against the illegal water projects coming up in the neighbouring States, especially the Babhali project being constructed by the Maharashtra government on the Godavari in Nanded district.
BJP State president B Dattatreya strongly criticised the State Government for being indifferent to the developments on Babhali project issue. Karnataka too was completing irrigation projects on a war-footing, he said. “Courts and diplomacy will not solve the problems. Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy should build pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the matter and settle the issues,” the BJP leader said. The party’s movement against the projects would continue in a phased manner in the Telangana region, he added.
TRS irrigation expert R Vidyasagara Rao demanded that the Central government set up a high-level expert committee to resolve inter-State water disputes.
Maharashtra was constructing 12 projects on the Godavari unauthorisedly, he alleged.
BJP MLA Y Laxmi Narayana, party leaders from five Telangana districts and many irrigation experts took part in the meeting.
