BJP fails to open account in UP by-polls

Lucknow, November 10: Continuing with its poor form since the 15th general elections, the BJP failed to open its account in the by-election for 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The party which won two of 11 seats in the last assembly election failed to retain even a single seat in the by-polls, whose results were announced today.

In fact, the party even lost prestigious Lucknow (west) seat, which it had never lost since 1989. In 2007 assembly election, the party won Lucknow (west) and Kolasala seats.

In Lucknow, internal bickering led to party’s debacle, as the BJP candidate Amit Puri lost the seat to Congress nominee Shyam Kishore Shukla by a margin of over 2,100 votes.

Even a written appeal issued by Vajpayee in support of Puri failed to see the BJP candidate through.
