Thane, April 03:The recent announcement that Thane district emerged as one of the most populous district in the country has once again given rise to the long time pending demand to bifurcate the district.
A couple of days ago, the Census authorities announced the 2011 census results and declared that the Thane district with 15 talukas topped the list in the country with a record population of 1.10 crore. The population of the district in the last census was 81 lakhs.
Addressing a news conference here today, a senior BJP leader and former National Council member Om Prakash Sharma, has urged President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to appoint a high level committee headed by the retired Judge of the Supreme court to suggest measures for its bifurcation in view of the enormous growth of population in the district.
He said that in a memorandum to the President and the Prime Minister, the party has asked to consider the long-pending demand to carve out a new district consisting of the adivasi areas of Palghar, Dahanu, Vikramgadh, Talasari, Mokhada and Wada.
Mr Sharma said the tribals in these areas were totally neglected as a result of which they are deprived of basic needs like health care and education.
The region is underdeveloped due to inadequate investment of public funds, low agriculture productivity.
