BJP demand arrest of AIUDF chief, allege militant links

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in Assam on Wednesday took to the streets, demanding the immediate arrest of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badaruddin Ajmal, accusing him of having links with militant outfits.

“Members of Bharatiya Janata Party youth organisation of Guwahati district have decided to protest and we demand that Ajmal be immediately arrested,” said Mukto Deka, a protester.

BJP MP Bijoya Chakravarty said few years back the matter of alleged ties between AIUDF and militant outfits was taken up with the Indian parliament.

“In 2010 and in 2011, I had taken up the issue in the parliament and had said that the activities of the militants are increasing and the matter should be investigated,” said Chakravarty.

Meanwhile, Ajmal denied any links bweteen him or his party with Bangladesh-based militants and said that the allegations were baseless and a plot to tarnish his and the party’s image.

Earlier this month, six people were arrested from Assam’s Barpeta district for their alleged involvement in the blast in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. According to an Assam police official, preliminary investigations revealed that those arrested were part of Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). (ANI)
