New Delhi, August 27: With AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi coming out in support of the farmers’ agitation in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP on Thursday launched a veiled attack against him adding to the game of political one-upmanship played by various parties over the stir.
Former BJP president Rajnath Singh, when asked about Rahul’s efforts like meeting the Prime Minister, said that “people know who is the son of a farmer and who are the supporters of poor people”.
His predecessor M Venkaiah Naidu also hit out at Rahul. “What is his experience? What is his contribution? Instead, let us talk about what the Prime Minister or the Congress president has done. They talk of the aam admi, but all their actions benefit the khas admi,” he said. He accused the government of doing nothing to help the farmers.
Singh, who did not attend the RLD-led Parliament march, said the BJP has always supported farmers’ agitation. “Our view is that the government should not acquire fertile land because it will create a food crisis,” he said and added that it was he who had raised the demand for bringing the land acquisition Bill in Parliament and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had assured that the Bill would be tabled.
