The State BJP would emerge as an alternative to the ruling party in Telangana by 2019, Telangana BJP president and MLA Dr K Laxman said here today.
Participating in a “Meet-the-Press” program organized by Press Club on its premises in Somajiguda here, the new BJP State chief said the party would play the role of constructive Opposition and would fill the political vacuum created by the weakened Congress party in the State.
“The great responsibility put on my shoulders by national party president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to make the Telangana State party as an alternative force by strengthening it from village level”, Laxman said, adding that “party ideology and workers are our strength”.
Accusing the TRS government of failing to fulfill its election promises, the State BJP chief said his party would play a constructive role and mount pressure on the State government to keep its promises given to the public before elections by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. “People have given mandate to the TRS on its promises like double bedroom houses, employment to youth, three acre land to SC/ STs, KG-to-PG free education, reservation to minorities. But the TRS government was not bothering to keep its promises”, he said, adding “Electoral victory was not a permanent feature in politics as people will teach a lesson if any government failed to fulfull its promises”>
Taking a dig at KCR, Dr Laxman said it will be a big news for the public if Chief Minister KCR goes to Secretariat. Stating that BJP would initiate programs to allay fears and doubts of a certain section about the ideology of the party, Dr Laxman said, “We always oppose vote-bank politics. The party would support reservation to poor people, irrespective of caste or religion. The BJP would oppose caste and religion-based reservation, he reiterated.
Replying to a query how many marks he would give to the TRS government out of 100 marks, Dr Laxman quipped, “People would decide about marks in 2019”. Responding to another query on defections, Laxman said defections are not a good sign for democratic values. Public representatives should first resign from their posts and join any other party. Our party is totally against encouraging defections”, he added.
Press club president Ravikanth Reddy welcomed the guests while secretary Chary proposed a vote of thanks. (NSS)
