Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Biman Bose on Saturday said that issues over meetings being held at Victoria House had taken place earlier as well, but the party never took the matter to court unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“We have seen that our meetings were opposed near Victoria House several times. On one or two occasions our people did not obey the decisions and held meetings there without prior permission, but we never took the issue to the court. However, the BJP has taken the issue to court and the court has granted them a permission to hold a rally,” said Bose.
He further criticized the Trinamool Congress for running the government in an unconstitutional way.
“They take oath in the name of the constitution and the constitution says that democratic norms and forms are to be followed. Unfortunately, we have seen that the TMC-led government is flouting provisions of the Indian constitution, and is moving in unconstitutional ways, adapting whatever they feel is good. This is ominous for democratic policies and rights in West Bengal,” he added.
Earlier today, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that she is going to appeal against the decision of the Calcutta High Court today, which has granted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah permission to hold a rally in the city on Sunday.
Earlier on Thursday, Kolkata Municipal Corporation had refused Amit Shah the permission to hold a rally in the city thereby deepening the feud between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP.
The party had applied as early as July for permission to hold a public meeting outside Victoria Hall, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee holds an annual rally every July for her party.
Earlier, the city police had said that Shah’s meeting would cause inconvenience to the commuters, since a major traffic intersection is located at the venue.
Differences between the TMC and the BJP have cropped up after recent developments in Saradha chit fund scam where a few TMC leaders were named and the party later alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government is at the back of CBI actions against the regional party. (ANI)
